Apps bolster iphone in business, but AT&T remains an obstacle
Fast forward to April 2009. With the announcement of the iPhone 3.0 software in March and the third generation iPhone expected to be unveiled by the middle of 2009, I decided that it was time for TechRepublic to start paying more attention to the iPhone again and to revisit the iPhone App Store to see if there is anything in there to make it more compelling to the corporate world.
So I dug out the iPhone 3G, put it in a Griffin case with a ZAGG InvisibleSheild , loaded a bunch of iPhone apps, and started regularly carrying it as a Wi-Fi device. The timing was good since I’ve been traveling a lot this spring, so I’ve been able to test it like a true road warrior.
I’ve been pretty surprised and impressed. This time around, the iPhone has proven to be far more useful, and it’s entirely due to the software.
Apps, for the winAfter my eight-month hiatus from the iPhone, it’s been great to see the improvement of several important applications and the breadth and quality of new applications in the iPhone App Store. Last year it was a struggle to find anything useful for business users. Now, there’s a wealth of good stuff, and I keep finding new apps every week.
Verizon Wireless to launch 4G phone next year – Cell Phones ...
Earlier this week Verizon Wireless detailed speeds related to their field tests of the 4G LTE technology they expect to roll out to 25-30 markets by the end of the year and nationwide by 2013. Now, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) is reporting that Verizon will have its first 4G handset six months earlier than expected. The drop date for the phone is believed to be mid-2011.
Verizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer, Anthony Melone, is quoted in the article saying that initial phones won’t have a single, integrated chip. This means that the first 4G phones for Verizon will actually have dual chipsets which will allow them to not only access the new 4G technology, but Verizon’s current 3G network as well. Sprint , though marketing that they have the first 4G network, has yet to unveil a 4G handset of its own, but one is expected this summer.
Based on that news it seems that Sprint will be the first one out of the gate with a 4G offering while Verizon Wireless won’t be far behind. Considering the competition being offered by Sprint with their own 4G deployment Verizon Wireless execs had to be happy to hear that a 4G mobile phone would be available six months earlier than expected. After all, a 4G network isn’t much good if there’s nobody with a mobile phone that can use it.
