Exasperated customers can spend months wrangling with their cell phone companies over billing and service disputes. Some reluctantly cough up payments they consider unfair just to get the bill collector off their back and protect their credit ratings.
But frustrated customers are increasingly winning refunds, free phones and other concessions from cell phone giants by taking their grievances to watchdog groups or regulators. In this state, the Attorney General's Office and the Better Business Bureau can often get complaints resolved in a matter of weeks, if not days.
Because cell phone service in this country is unregulated for rates and service quality, the watchdog groups don't have the power to play judge, decide cases or issue fines like regulators do. Rather, they open case files, ask the companies to review the complaint, and keep tabs on a company's responses. Usually, that's enough to bump consumer complaints to a high priority status.
The technology is called Push To Talk (PTT) but no-one in the UK supports it. Orange did offer a PTT-style service (called Talk Now) for a monthly subscription fee a while back on selected handsets but this has now been stopped.
I think the problem is that PTT competes with the network’s ability to charge for normal calls and they’ve all been unable to work out how to charge for PTT usage.
