Just a note, trying to use the Quicksilver device from an Acer Aspire One running Windows XP SP3 (the Acer’s only a few months old, I think it came with XP for performance reasons). Everything works well for a while, but then the device stops receiving any data. AT&T Communication Manager software thinks all is well, the connection isn’t dropped as far as it’s concerned, and data’s being sent out, but nothing is ever received. Disconnecting and reconnecting doesn’t help, a reboot clears it up but it’s several minutes before everything’s chugging along again. It does seem to happen more often during peak hours. Likely something on the Acer, maybe it’ll all go away with an upgrade to Win 7 but for now it’s irritating to the point of being useless. Tried to get some help from the AT&T Live Chat (via Wifi elsewhere) but _they_ went away too, so we’re trying to sort it out alone. Tried the Option software but it wouldn’t work at all.
I found the AT&T Quicksilver device to drop my connections often. I have also experienced an Error 635 when connecting. I needed a device wireless device for my business, and unfortunately, the Quicksilver did not meet my needs. I needed more reliability. I have since switched to the Verizon Mi-Fi for roughly the same monthly price, and I am quite satisfied with my experience. It also allows me to connect up to 5 devices at one time.
First of all, a big thanks to Mr. Gadget’s review, which is what told me you need to set the APN field to “isp.cingular” to get this thing to work. I only wish I’d found it a few hours sooner.
The main problem is the documentation is quite clear and says not to do this.
A second problem is that there are three downloads on the AT&T support GT Mac Connect 10.4.11 AND 10.5.x
The first link turns out to be the one you want for Mac OS X 10.4.11 at least. (If you follow it you’ll find that it supposedly supports Mac OS X 10.3.9, 10.4.11, and 10.5.x. The third one leads to a version which AFAICT doesn’t work at all, although ironically the associated documentation does tell you to set the APN field.
